Striped

hello! i've decided to move everything from the previous weebly page onto here, so you can easily add comments and suggestions! hope this will make the place much more pleasant, even though i am quite afraid of blogging in general. anyways.

now: this is the striped mug cozy and matching coaster, as you can see. there's not much of a pattern to write, because everything depends on the form of your mug - definitely not a beginner's project, could barely cope with it myself, but the colors do make up for other shortcomings (literally).

the idea is: making a foundation chain for the bottom circumference, and then doing sc's (or dc's, or trebles) round after round - but you must do increases in nearly every row or just occasionally, depending on how your mug is shaped. constant fitting is crucial.
also, after the foundation chain, in the second row, you must leave an approximately 2 to 4-ch space (free for the handle) and turn in every round so as to avoid that space.
at the end, you may crochet a border all round the thing, add a button and some chains to the other side to secure it. again, length depends on how tight you want your buttoned-up cozy to be.

Marion's mug warmer cozy is a good guide to these basics and is a free pattern for straighter mugs.

now for the coaster: same no-particular-pattern situation, but much much easier. crochet a foundation chain of desired length + 1 ch if doing sc's or +2 ch if dc's. i've done 20 chain stitches in row 1, started row 2 from the second chain and crocheted 19 sc's, then ch 1, turned, crocheted 19 sc's and so on, so as to make 19 rows in total to form a rectangle.
the white border: join with sl st anywhere on outside edge, do sc's all around and join with sl st to starting ch. in corners, crochet 3 sc's.

did not turn out particularly neat, hope you'll have more patience with the edging.

for more stripy satisfaction, here are some tips from Lucy for joining in a new color and for working in ends as you go (from the 4th picture onwards).

have fun, and since it's become a blog, feel free to send some feedback.
